Organised women's cricket was first played in Hong Kong in 2001 when matches between HKCC, KCC and the HKCA Coaches were arranged. Further fixtures were played sporadically over the following years until 2004-05 when the first HKCA Women's League was formed with teams from HKCC, KCC and Lamma CC participating. The HKCA Women's League expanded to five teams in the 2005-06 season and then to six teams in 2006-07.

The first Hong Kong Women's Cricket Team made its inaugural tour to Shanghai in April 2004. In 2006, the Hong Kong Women's Cricket Team played a three match series against the Pakistan National Women's Cricket Team in Lahore, Pakistan for a place in the 2009 Women's World Cup to be played in Australia. In 2007, the Hong Kong Women's Cricket Team played the first full international match against the China Women's Cricket Team and followed this by competing in the ACC Women's Tournament in Malaysia.

The Hong Kong Women's cricket team came of age when they won the inaugural ACC Women's Twenty20 Championships, played in Malaysia during July 2009. They repeated their success with victory in the ACC Women's Twenty20 Championships 2011 played in Kuwait.
